How to read the Pokémon type chart

Every Pokémon and every damaging move has a type. When a move hits, its type is compared with the defending Pokémon’s type, and the damage is multiplied by the result.

  1. Find the move’s type in the left column (in the attacking view).
  2. Find the defending Pokémon’s type along the top.
  3. Read the cell where they meet. Green 2 means super effective, red ½ means not very effective, dark 0 means the move has no effect, and a blank cell means normal damage.

Switch to the defending view to read it the other way round: find your Pokémon’s type on the left and see how every attacking type hits it. In that view, red shows its weaknesses and green shows its resistances. You can also jump to any type:

How dual types work

Many Pokémon have two types. To find how much damage they take, multiply the matchup against each type.

Combining two type matchups
Against type 1Against type 2Damage taken
2×2×4× (double weakness)
2×1×2× (weakness)
2×½×1× (cancels out)
½×½×¼× (double resistance)
Any0×0× (immune)

For example, Charizard is Fire and Flying. Rock is super effective against both, so Rock moves do 4× damage. Grass is resisted by both, so Grass moves only do ¼×. Ground has no effect on Flying, so Charizard is immune to Ground even though Fire is weak to it. Of the 171 possible typings, 53 have at least one 4× weakness.

The type chart in Pokémon Infinite Fusion

Pokémon Infinite Fusion uses exactly the same type chart as the modern main series games, including the Fairy type. What makes it different is typing. A fused Pokémon takes its primary type from the head and its secondary type from the body, and if the body’s type would repeat the head’s, it takes the body’s other type instead.

That opens up a lot of new type combinations. There are 171 possible typings (18 single types and 153 pairs). The regular Pokémon in Infinite Fusion cover 115 of them. With fusions, 170 are possible, so 55 typings exist only as fusions. Under this site’s fusion rules, the only typing no fusion can have is pure Flying.

Check the typing of any fusion, in both orders, with the type calculator, or see a specific fusion’s weaknesses, abilities included, with the weakness calculator.

STAB: why a Pokémon’s own type matters in attack

A move that matches one of the user’s own types gets the same-type attack bonus, or STAB, which multiplies its damage by 1.5. A Water-type Pokémon using a Water move hits 1.5× harder than a Normal-type Pokémon using the same move. STAB stacks with type effectiveness, so a super-effective STAB move does 3× damage. See exact numbers in the damage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many Pokémon types are there?

There are 18 types: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy. Pokémon Infinite Fusion uses all 18.

How do I read the Pokémon type chart?

Find the attacking move's type on the left and the defending Pokémon's type along the top. The cell where they meet shows the damage multiplier: 2 is super effective, ½ is not very effective, 0 means no effect, and a blank cell is normal damage.

How do dual types work?

Multiply the matchup against each of the Pokémon's two types. Two weaknesses make a 4× weakness, a weakness and a resistance cancel out to 1×, two resistances make ¼×, and an immunity always makes the damage 0×.

Is the Infinite Fusion type chart different from the main games?

No. Pokémon Infinite Fusion uses the same 18-type chart as the modern main series games, including the Fairy type. What changes is typing: a fusion takes its primary type from the head and its secondary type from the body, which creates many type combinations no regular Pokémon has.

Which type has the most weaknesses?

As a single type, Grass and Rock each have the most weaknesses, with 5. Grass is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying and Bug. Rock is weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground and Steel.

Which type has the fewest weaknesses?

As a single type, Normal and Electric each have only 1 weakness: Normal is weak only to Fighting; Electric is weak only to Ground. Steel has the most resistances and immunities, with 11.
